Thirteen seniors from Immaculata University, including myself, came together at Villa Maria by the Sea Retreat Center in Stone Harbor, New Jersey February 13-15 for the annual Senior Crossroads Retreat. This event-filled weekend was full of spiritual renewal and the promotion of a sense of community among the attendees. As graduation draws near, seniors are faced with the reality of life decisions, and this retreat has provided a needed opportunity to pause and reflect on what the future holds for us soon-to-be graduates. The retreat allowed us to step away from our busy schedules and focus on our faith, personal development, and bonding with one another.

The retreat center is right on the Atlantic coast, which creates a very peaceful and calming atmosphere for relaxation and reflection. Stone Harbor provides beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean. The sound of the waves and the view of the sunrise gave retreatants an opportunity to be present in the moment. This environment is perfect for seniors who are about to move into the next stage of life after graduation.

During the retreat, we engaged in discussions and activities that centered on key issues like vocations, community, relationships, and future plans for post-graduation. These discussions encouraged us to reflect on who we are, who we’re becoming, and which values we would like to take with us into the next phase of our lives. We even did a scavenger hunt across town, which encouraged trust and teamwork. We comforted each other, proving that we are not alone in our struggles and hopes for the future.

There were various activities throughout the weekend of the retreat, such as small group discussions, reflection, prayer services, and quiet time. In small groups and free time, we were able to share our wisdom, experiences, and struggles, creating a sense of community, honesty, and understanding. The chance to open up to one another gave us the opportunity to feel heard and understood by others. Quiet time gave retreatants the chance to think deeply and allow reflection on our experiences. Prayer service gave us a chance to come together in peace and unity.

The Senior Crossroads Retreat is an annual event within Campus Ministry that is open to all seniors. It is a time for future graduates to reflect on their college experience and prepare emotionally and spiritually for the future. As my friends and I have found, this retreat is a special reminder of how much we have grown together during our time at Immaculata and how important it is to reflect before embarking on the next journey of life.
